PQQ- a new B vitamin?

July 25, 2011 | Author: Julia Gullotti, ND | Posted in Nutritional Supplements

What is PQQ: Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), also known as methoxatin, is a water-soluble and heat stable molecule. PQQ was first discovered as an enzyme bacterial cofactor in 1979 from bacterium but has since been found in everyday foods, such as; natto (fermented soy beans), tea, papayas, kiwis, parsley and green peppers.

Potential benefits: PQQ is capable of catalyzing continuous redox cycling (the ability to catalyze repeated oxidation and reduction reactions). In animal research PQQ has been reported to contribute to a variety of biological functions related to survival needs; such as, neonatal growth and reproduction performance, while nutritional studies have indentified that PQQ may be able to serve as a growth factor. One study revealed that when PQQ was supplemented to animals, it prevented oxidative changes that would have typically occurred and be potentially damaging. Another rat study concluded that PQQ may be effective for preventing neurodegeneration caused by oxidative stress. Ultimately, supplementation has been linked to benefits related to cognition, immune function and antioxidant activity, as well as protection from cardiac and neurological events.

Not yet a vitamin: PQQ is not yet classified as a vitamin (we have not had a new classification of a vitamin since Vitamin B12 in 1948); however, animal studies are leading the investigation that will hopefully result in the justification for categorizing PQQ as a vitamin (vital to life). PQQ has been shown to be essential in normal growth and development and due to its involvement in cell signaling pathways; it may be a novel vitamin, perhaps considered a member of the B vitamin group because of its molecular nature and function. Although, human research at this time is limited, preliminary evidence suggests that there may be similar benefits for PQQ supplementation in humans as those found in animals. To make the case researchers note that many of PQQ’s functions are universal.

A review on PQQ stated that, “the observation that increased mitochondriogenesis and antioxidant functions maybe healthful features of PQQ supplementation opens the doors for both therapeutic applications and possible use as an ergogenic aid…Given the range of functions and apparent survival benefits (e.g., improved reproductive performance) it is reasonable to suggest that PQQ may play a fundamental role in metabolism.”

Research indication: Though the research is limited in substantiating claims associated with PQQ’s use, animal research is promising and many researchers have touted its potential benefits in preventing some effects associated with aging, especially the degradation of mitochondria; which can potentially also affect energy levels and cognition.

Toxicity/Safety: At this time there is no evidence to indicate that doses of 60 mg per day for humans cause any acute side effects or overt toxicity.

Recommended Product: Quality of Life Vita PQQ is a wonderful product for those who wish to supplement PQQ into their vitamin regime; at only 20 mg per dose it is delivered at a safe level in a quality product.

Please always be sure to check with your healthcare professional before beginning any supplement program and always discontinue use should you experience any side effects.
