As more and more people are educating themselves on healthy living through diet, exercise and skincare, many ingredients that have been utilized for years have had a negative spotlight shone upon them and consumers are taking action. The more research I do on products that come into contact with my skin, such as; sunscreen, shampoos, moisturizers etc., the more important I feel it is to limit contact with the potentially harmful chemicals that some of them contain. It seems there are already so many unavoidable toxins in the environment that I intake on a regular basis, I might as well focus on where I do have some control.

Like all the chemicals, ingredients and toxins I research, there are studies that report significant health effects and potential dangers; as well as, studies that tout their safety-as their respective company plays off any negative studies. When making a decision of whether to avoid an ingredient or chemical I evaluate the research, both positive and negative. However, the fact that there are adverse effects being reported in studies; whether animal or human, always lingers in the back of my mind that this particular chemical can’t be that safe if there are significant health concerns associated with its use being reported in numerous studies. More often than not, I chose to avoid the ingredient as much as possible reduce the chance of it having a negative effect on my health.

The most recent ingredient I have been researching is paraben. I was surprised to find that parabens are found in many things from; shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gels, shower gels, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste, to name just a few. Parabens are the most commonly used synthetic preservative in many cosmetics. They ensure a long shelf life by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, yeast and mold. They are also used as preservatives in cereals, snacks, and meat products. These chemicals are currently being investigated by the FDA and other organizations for safety due to their wide use and potential health concerns.

Cosmetic Companies say parabens are not harmful because they remain on our skin; however a lot of controversy surrounding parabens arose in 2004 when a study in the UK found high levels of parabens in 18 out of 20 breast tumor samples. Studies have shown that Parabens can mimic estrogen, which has been linked to the development of breast cancer. Though this study alone can not determine whether or not parabens are directly related to or cause breast cancer; the association is something to consider. This study seems to indicate that parabens can be absorbed through the skin and have the ability to accumulate in the body. Animal studies also imply that parabens may interfere with male reproductive functions; as well as, be thyrotoxic during critical stages of development by producing suppressive effects on hormonal responsiveness.

If you chose to avoid parabens all together it may be virtually impossible because it seems like they are in the majority of our cosmetics and processed foods; however, read labels, become aware and make conscious choices where you can in regards to limiting your exposure to them. There are a number of great paraben-free cosmetics and hygiene products available; Weleda makes wonderful paraben-free shampoo and body wash for babies and Kiss My Face and Beauty Without Cruelty have fantastic organic, paraben-free lines.

Becoming an educated consumer is the first step to taking health into your own hands and body!
